A Cultural Revival is Underway - Yarrila Place

Luke Young • November 13, 2023

In the heart of Coffs Harbour, a cultural renaissance is underway with the establishment of the new Yarrila Arts and Museum (YAM). This captivating new building in Coffs Harbour serves as a beacon for travellers and art enthusiasts seeking to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of the region’s history.

Yarrila, is a Gumbaynggirr word meaning to brighten or illuminate. With its green façade the new centre is a hub of cultural events, art exhibitions, storytelling sessions that allow guests to dive deeper into the living traditions of the Gumbaynggirr people.

YAM has five contemporary exhibition spaces. ‘Yaamanga Around here’ – is a permanent exhibition that explores the history and identity of Coffs Harbour through themes of place, community and belonging.

Currently the ‘Still 2023’ exhibition is in its fourth iteration. The exhibition invites fresh and contemporary explorations of still life themes and highlights the diversity and vitality of still life in Australian contemporary art. The exhibition is on till the 3rd of December 2023.

In addition to YAM, Coffs Harbour offers a myriad of other cultural activities:

  • Kaleidoscope is a community initiative designed to engage and empower local artisans in a one-of-a-kind retail setting where their products will be seen as they have never been seen before. Find them on the ground floor of Coffs Central Shopping Centre.
  • The National Cartoon Gallery: For lovers of humour and satire, the Bunker Gallery is a unique attraction. It hosts a collection of cartoons, caricatures, and comic art, offering an entertaining experience.
  • Combine your cultural stay with a visit to Jetty Theatre. Located within walking distance of The Observatory, you will find a variety of live music performances, theatre productions, and cultural festivals throughout the year.
